Lithium Ion battery is a kind of rechargeable battery which mainly consists of variety of cells in which Lithium Ions move from cathode (-) to anode (+) through an electrolyte as the discharging and charging occurs.
The aging problem of lithium batteries limits their energy storage and power output capabilities, and also affects the cost, life and other performance of electric vehicles. It is a key scientific issue in lithium battery research. The lithium ion battery life cycle includes battery design, production, real vehicle use and cascade utilization.
1. How long does a 3.7 V lithium ion battery last?
The estimated life span of our typical lithium ion battery is about 5 to 10 years or 2000-4000 charge cycles. 18650 and 16650 are the rechargeable batteries that came into existence when these were firstly used in weapon lights and flash light. It became popular only because of its energy density it could store a lot more energy and could deliver a greater power for running different electrical equipment like lithium trolling motor battery.
Now here the most important question arises that what the lithium ion battery life cycle is.The duration of a 3.7v Li-ion battery depends on the capacity of the battery itself, the discharge rate, and the current of the load.
2. How long do lithium Ion batteries last in storage?
Lithium ion batteries usually have a lifetime of 5-8 years. The process in which a battery discharge when not in use is known as self discharge and it usually occurs at 3.5% per month. This degradation in power does not depend on whether you use or don’t use them. If you don’t use it for a long time, just keep the battery at 40-60% and charge it every three months.
3. What is lithium ion battery life cycle?
As we know that, lithium ion battery life cycle is defined as the number of charge and discharge cycles that a battery can complete before losing its actual performance or before depleting all the power. As we say from above discussion that a lithium ion battery last up to 5-10 years but if we keep them with better care then can last up to so many years as well as 4000 cycle.
4. How many charging cycles can you expect to get?
As we have already discussed that the minimum life span most of the manufacturers expected from lithium ion batteries is around 5-10 years or at least 2000-4000 charging cycles but if we keep our lithium Ion batteries with great care then they can last as long as 4000 cycles.
5. How to make Lithium ion batteries last longer?
If lithium Ion Batteries are kept with great care then they can last up to so many years. Here are some tips that can be used to protect the lithium ion battery life cycle from external environment.
1. Minimum temperature
The minimum temperature that is required by a lithium ion battery is -20 and 60 degrees centigrade. If lithium ion battery is subjected to an elevated temperature then it will be so much worse for its performance. Heat is the most important environmental factor that can reduce lithium ion batteries capacity to generate power.
2. Avoid full discharging
Do not allow lithium ion battery to discharge below 2.5 volts per cell. If we overdischarge or fully discharge, battery appears to be dead. And that means the battery’s capacity to generate power has vanished. In this case, you don’t have any kind of charger to recharge your battery only by restarting BMS.
3. Avoid using fast chargers
Avoid using fast chargers even if it is convenient, but it can make a lithium ion battery to discharge at a faster rate than those chargers, which are being used to charge lithium ion batteries. By using a fast charger, lithium ion battery will discharge too quickly and as we know that quick discharging also leads to loss in power generation. Therefore, we should avoid using fast charger.
4. Higher humidity
It is not wise to store your battery in high moisture environments. It will cause great damages to your battery.
6. Do lithium ion batteries expire even if they are not used?
Batteries have an expiration date. For example, the service life of lithium battery is 5-10 years, and it is under the conditions of good environment and attention to battery usage, so when the service life is exceeded, the battery will expire. Therefore, try to choose a better quality battery, which will shorten the expiration time.
7. Should lithium ion batteries be stored while charged?
Lithium ion battery should be stored in a charge state. It is not only about lithium ion battery, all the batteries should be stored while charged. The ideal case for a lithium ion battery is to be stored at 40-60%. Because this charged state will prevent the battery from drawing below 2.5Volt per cell. As we know when a battery drops below 2.5 volt then it will be considered as dead. So in order to prolong the lithium ion battery life cycle, we have to store it ideally at 40-60%.
8. How to store lithium ion batteries in winter?
Storing lithium ion battery in a cold place can crack some of the inner material of the battery and separate them from the surrounding materials. In this way, the capacity of the battery to generate power will reduce. So we have to take care of battery and will have to keep it at a place which is no more colder than -20 degrees Celsius or warmer than 60 degrees Celsius. So one can store lithium ion battery in winter.
9. How to select batteries which can which can last longer?
Those important factors that are involved in buying lithium ion battery are as follows:
First of all check the Expiry date.
Check the weight of the battery.
Do a proper check of your lithium Ion battery whether it is in good condition or not before buying.
Check Whether in a cool condition. Too hot or too cold temperature will breakdown the internal components in both physical and chemical levels.
10. Which can last longer lithium ion batteries Ni Cad batteries?
Lithium ion batteries typically last several times longer than Ni Cad batteries. Although it is true that lead acid batteries cost less, but on the other hand lithium ion batteries are expensive. Ni Cad batteries require regular maintenance and does not last as long as lithium ion batteries. Lithium ion battery is therefore considered as a good and effective way to generate power and more efficiency. As we know, lithium is a premium battery technology with a longer lifespan than typical lead acid batteries.
11. Can a lithium ion battery last 20 years or even longer?
Yes! a lithium ion battery can last up to 10 years only if it is kept with good care and is maintained properly, for example, plugging in vehicles could reliably last up to 10 years. Only battery which has a higher energy density then lithium ion battery life cycle usually can last up to 10 years.
In order to store batteries for longer time and prolong lithium ion battery life cycle, they should be kept in an environment away from sunlight heat and humidity because heat and moisture is a fire for the internal structure of lithium ion batteries. And also a battery should be used on regular basis then it will last for more time.
12. Advantages of lithium ion batteries
There are a number of advantages of lithium ion batteries over typical let me see batteries which are as follows:
They are light weighted. Their self discharge rate is low as compared other batteries.
They require no maintenance not like typical lead acid batteries.
